Inside The Journey of A Young Singer Taking Voice Lessons with Ireland Robinson

Ireland isn’t your average student. She didn’t just show up to a session one day because her parents suggested it—she asked for voice lessons at 5 years old. “She came to me and said, ‘I want to sing like Alicia Keys,’” her mom Carrie told me.

It’s rare to see that kind of clarity at such a young age. But even more rare? Parents who listen, support, and guide without pressure. And that’s exactly what Carrie did.

“It was a challenge to find someone who would even teach a five-year-old,” she admitted.

“But when we did, I saw how much it meant to her.”

Ireland’s first teacher helped her explore music. But as she grew, her voice and needs evolved. That’s when they found us at VoxTape Studios, to help Ireland sing the styles she wants and explore her creativity.

Supporting Young Singers Without Rushing

Kate and Ireland have worked together virtually for a couple years now, but this was their first in-person session. Watching them interact was so special. There was comfort, trust, and shared language from all their time training together.

One of the most important things we talk about when working with younger singers is pacing. Not just vocal pacing—but emotional, mental, and artistic pacing.

“She’s always been expressive,” Kate said. “It’s about helping her use her voice in a way that’s age-appropriate and sustainable.”

That doesn’t mean holding her back. It means guiding her forward in a way that protects both her vocal health and her love of singing.

Technique + Storytelling

In their mini-lesson, Kate focused on two things:

  1. Getting more tone in the sound (without strain)

  2. Connecting to the emotion of the lyrics

Young singers often jump into “performing” without actually feeling the lyrics. Kate gently guided Ireland to slow down and think about what the character might be experiencing. Even at her age, that clicked.

She sounded fuller, more present, and still totally her.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a parent wondering when to start lessons, here’s my honest take:

Start when the interest is real. Then find a coach who nurtures—not pushes. Someone who builds vocal skill while protecting that early spark of joy. If you want to dig deeper into the topic of young singers, check out this post here.

Ireland’s journey is just beginning, but she’s already building the mindset and tools of a true artist. And that’s the kind of foundation that lasts.
